Blending Architecture and Mind-Body Science to Move Better and Feel Better

Architecture teaches us that form follows function—a principle that applies just as much to the body as it does to to any structure. Using alignment, awareness, and breath mechanics, we help students renovate their internal landscapes so that movement and energy flow with ease.

Integrating Structural and Somatic Awareness for Lasting Change

Traditional wellness models often focus on symptom relief—offering temporary fixes without addressing the deeper patterns that shape our lives. You might feel better momentarily, but without restructuring the foundation, old habits return.

Our approach to yoga is different. We organize the body's internal structure so that well-being becomes physiologically and neurologically embedded—a state of being, rather than a fleeting experience.

We don’t just teach yoga. We teach internal self-organization, helping individuals cultivate a body that moves efficiently, breathes expansively, and regulates itself naturally.

Katonah Yoga® has evolved over the past 40 years through the work of Nevine Michaan, Abbie Galvin, and otherswith expertise in esoteric philosophy, kinesthetic dynamics, Taoist theory, and sacred geometry. This open system provides a blueprint for understanding the interplay between biomechanics, breath, hormones, and the mind—using metaphor, pattern, and longevity practices to reimagine movement as a tool for deep transformation.

Origins of Katonah Yoga®

Katonah yoga was formulated by Nevine Michaan. Born in Egypt in 1954, Nevine Michaan moved to New York at the age of three. In her early 20’s, while studying history and comparative religion at Vassar College, she discovered meditation. She understood that there is a function, a formality, and a fit to the universe and that yoga is a tool, a technique – a practice with repetition which gives us the opportunity to participate in life with intelligence and joy.

Nevine started a daily practice in NYC with renowned yoga instructor Allan Bateman in the 1970s and became fully immersed in what would become her life’s work. She began teaching Yoga in 1980, and founded the Katonah Yoga Center in Katonah, New York in 1986.
